At
the turn of the century, James Walker Tufts, whose
endowment created Tufts University, selected this extraordinary
setting for a health resort. Frederick Law
Olmstead - the man who designed Central Park - was
commissioned to lay out the town and landscape it
and the Village of Pinehurst was born.
|
|
Mr.
Tufts completed his new hotel, The Carolina, in
1901. Activities for guest included playing cards,
dancing, taking walks, or carriage trips. As
early as 1897, golf was introduced to the area. To
enhance the enjoyment of golf
for his guests, Tufts employed Donald Ross,
a young Scotsman, as a golfing professional. Mr.
Ross remained at Pinehurst until his death in
1948. The names of Tufts and Ross are forever
linked to Pinehurst.
|
|
Today,
the residents and guests of Pinehurst can enjoy
the work and vision of the men who worked so
hard to pursue a vision of a village with
beautiful streets and architecture, enjoyable pastimes,
a mild climate, and the fragrant pine forests.
|
|
The
charm of the
village lies in buildings that remain steeped in
tradition and history. The brick walks and
abundant landscaping and flowers have welcomed
people to the hospitality of the south with a
"New England" style village |
|
Pinehurst's
first hotel, The Holly Inn, opened for visitors
only seven months after Tufts first saw the spot
he named Pinehurst. The Holly, as seen
below, has just undergone major renovation is a
show place for guests to enjoy today.

Prudential
Gouger O'Neal & Saunders has been privileged
to be in the center of the village for over 38
years. The two story building you see above
is the home of our Pinehurst Office. We
enjoy living and working in the village just as
Mr. Tufts envisioned at the turn of the century!

|
"It's
a beautiful day in Pinehurst!"
In
1996, Pinehurst was designated as a National
Landmark for its significant part in the history
of golf in the United States. The genius of Tufts,
Ross and Olmstead are our heritage.
